The Call of Duty 4 (CoD4) community is in a state of flux with the European summer LAN's lingering dangerously on the horizon and the rejection of Clanbase and its Eurocup recently, you'd be forgiven for thinking that CoD4 has started to stagnate, a community waiting for something to happen. 

Ryan 'raf1' Palmer is one man whose taken it upon himself to push the competitive community forward, he does however present quite a problem for both me (as an interviewer) and the community, the good sort of problem though. He's one of the first competitive mod' developers whose relatively high skilled, having just been accepted into invite along with his Tetris team mates. He's also a personal friend of mine, and in theory should know exactly what the competitive CoD4 community wants from its 'promod', I'm not so sure however.

For those who don't know “promod was designed for two reasons. To unite the European competitive community behind one standardised ruleset, and because development on 'PAM' - the current competitive mod has stopped, something was needed to fill the gap.”

When asked why so many rulesets had developed independently, he said “the main difference with CoD4 and the other titles [CoD and CoD2] is the difference between the stock and competitive game. In CoD you could join a server and do exactly the same things as you would in a match. CoD2 was fairly similar, CoD4 however isn't. The guns behave completely different in the stock game, have different damage, and you've all these perks like airstrikes, grenade launchers and so on.”</description>

The overall goal of the mod is to balance CoD4, make CoD4 more fun, and to increase the skill gap.

With this new version of the OpenWarfare Project they keep introducing standard features supported by various mods out there but again also new exciting features as well as a lot of improvements to previous introduced features.

The Subversion repository that they introduced on version 0.0.2 has been a great success with a lot of people around the world downloading the source code every day keeping up with the development of the mod. 

Bug fixes:

- No bugs have been reported but a lot of improvements have been made to existing features.

New Features:

- Option to remove stationary machine guns from the map.
- Option to enable friendly fire for claymores.
- Option to disable faction icon on claymores (does not affect Bomb Squad perk).
- Option to disable the laser beams on claymores.
- Option to always show the minimap in hardcore mode.
- Option to disable 3D icons (icons that are shown to the players indicating the location of objectives like DEFEND, CAPTURE, etc.

- Fixed waypoints for Killhouse and Broadcast. (added waypoints near spawn points so bots don't get lost, and fixed waypoints
that go through or too close to walls, trees etc..).
- Fixed &amp;quot;error dobj for xmodel 'body_mp_arab_regular_assault' has more than 128 bones (see console for details)&amp;quot;. This was caused
by having more than one weapon attached to the body. All i did was put a return in the stow_on_back and stow_on_hip functions.

Known Bugs

- After several map rotations the server will fill up with ZMBI clients, this is a bug in the executable which 
has not been fixed. I'm on the way to fixing it however it's very time consuming figuring it out.
- Bots will sometimes get stuck on the spot, it's like their threads get terminated and they just stand there.
- Bots will sometimes get caught inside dumpsters, and or other geometry, if this occurs, please take a screenshot 
and send it to me at perry_hart@hotmail.com. It can probably be fixed by changing the waypoints around.

There are a couple of other new features with this release:

Anti Sprint System:

As sprinting makes players rush the objectives in objective-based gametypes at match start, I put in a timer which disables sprinting for all players until the time is over.

Weapon Pools:

You can now opt to spawn up to 6 weapon caches (pools) randomly dotted around the map.

This works on any map which has TDM and SAB spawns.

The actual weapons are set via dvar, and you can use any of the MP weapons in COD4.

They spawn with a model gun case, and spin on top of the case. Once selected, they regenerate after a set time is up (set by dvar).

You can set waypoints on them, so that the pools are easy to find.


There are 2 versions for you to choose - 

1 that removes the enemy red hit blips until UAV is called;

1 that doesnt.

Tactical Realism Mod (TRM) is a mod for Call Of Duty 4. It is a modified version that originated from wrm (wolfbanes realism mod) used in cod, cod uo and cod 2. 

With TRM they have gone a step further then wrm by implementing the standard TR rules in the mod. If used with default settings you can not hurt anyone unless you aim down your sight, you take severe damage or death from second story jumps, you can not jumpshoot, dolphindive etc etc.

TRM is not trying to claim to be a realistic mod, it is still a videogame and the realism is always balanced with game factor, meaning it should still be fun to play.

It is built upon pezz's PeZBOT mod and it involves waves of angry bot zombies intent on killing players.

The will be a total of 15 waves in all, starting with 30 zombies and increasing depending on the difficulty level. A zombies health will also increase by these numbers as well, we are hoping for various types of zombies with differant powers, but atm there is only 1 simpleton zombie.

It is now possible to spawn about 400 bots !!!

These bots obviously do not take up slots and at the moment are a bit dumb and cant shoot players, they will instead grap, slash, claw, maul and generally try to eat players instead.

The weapons will get a revamp, the shotguns will be given a larger clip size and will have increased dammage, also weapons will get reskined as well as a few others i expect, ie sniper rifle's damage will be increased a lot.

We will report again when there is more news about this CoD4 modification.</description>

- Ranked with custom classes (sorry Admins running Linux servers, I don't have a Linux server to test the mod so I really have no idea how this mod will behave on Linux servers but I know there's a problem with ranking that should be fixed on the next COD4 patch).
- Spawn protection based on time. It gets automatically disabled if the protected player fires a gun, uses the knife, or throws any type of grenade.
- Spawn protection hit icon, a player shooting a protected player receives a hit icon feedback indicating that such player is being spawn protected.
- Option to disable hit icons from direct hits, through walls, or both.
- Option to disable the Juggernaut feedback icon.
- Option to move progress bars (capturing/destroying HQs, planting bombs, etc) to the bottom of the screen so it's not in the middle.
- Option to adjust fall damage height.
- Option to force auto assign so players can't pick a certain team.



- New health regeneration method that it's more progressive based on time.
- Option to disable the pain sounds.
- Option to set the health amount.
- Option to enable blood splatters when taking damage.
- Option to enable headshot blood splatter feedback.
- Option to enable knife blood splatter feedback.
- Option to enable anti bunny-hopping (I'm really proud of this implementation).
- Option to set the speed of the players based on what weapon they carry.
- Option to decrease the speed of the player by 12.5% if the player is using the Overkill perk.
- Option to disable the KILL icon and icons on the minimaps for the bomb carrier in Sabotage.
- Option to disable the flashing of the icons in Headquarters.
- Option to disable the flashing of the icons and the announcer in Domination when losing a flag.

Zombies! Mod v1.2 *Fixed Version*



*Added a new zombie class, 'rabid dog'.
*Hunters become immune to poison after 3 (poison) hits. This is pretty rare because it takes two hits to kill them after all of the damage, but hunters can pick up healthpacks.
*Removed scr_maxscore and replaced with scr_lastcamp
*Overhauled class picking menu system - there's a picture for each class, you can see them in my signature
*Improved FX e.g. ring of fire &amp;amp; lightning strike, to add distortion and use cloud shaders instead of blobs
*Each class of zombie has a different effect when their body disappears
*Hunters don't drop weapons if they die before a zombie is picked; to stop people cheating and getting two weapons
*Zombies can knife/bite by clicking (when they're not holding the USE key)

In the scores menu, kills is how many players you have frozen, assists is how
many team mates you have defrosted and deaths is how many times you have been frozen.



You score 50 XP for each defrost or freeze
Your team (team points, not everyone on your team) gets 20 points for a freeze and 10 points for a defrost.

The map ends when one of the teams has reached the score limit, or all of a team is been frozen or the time runs out.

- Using UAV now also spawns a pack of dogs that attack the enemy for 2 minutes. For now

you as a dog doing a handstand half way embedded in the ground. So i'd avoid that 
Use &amp;quot;svr_pezbots_dogpack_size&amp;quot; to change the number of dogs spawned.

- Bots can now play headquarters. 

- Bots can now use the hardpoint perks; uav+dogs, airstrike, and helicopter.

- Bots throw grenades. (120-1 chance they will throw instead of shooting).

- Bot animation system improvements, less jiggling about. Correct death anims etc..

- Better ground clamping, bot's shouldn't get stuck in the upper floors of buildings 
anywhere near as much as they used to.

- Bots now push out of eachother while moving, so they dont get stuck inside eachother.

I’ll just give some suggestions on what I see 98% of community maps fail at because of too much focus on aesthetic elements: COVER

Cover is a game mechanic in a lot of games, it’s a key tenet in life [and generally speaking] which is people don’t like to get shot and like to keep living. Cover provides a very important thing: Challenges


Challenges (A Formula For Fun):
   
  It’s a lot more fun to have an enemy take cover rather than to see them out in the open. It wouldn’t be rewarding to see a guy walk across an open field and snipe him compared to seeing him moving from cover to cover and presenting a challenge to the player. It also provides an “obstacle” challenge for players to maneuver around the map, and also adds variety to a scene. Being able to see the enemies move from cover to cover presents a fun challenge compared to if it was just a bare level design like community maps with buildings + minimum/no cover and enemies walking around in the open (especially on over sized maps, but that’s for another tip thread .
   
  Gears of War does a really beautiful job of this, both in SP and MP. Infact, it’s core game mechanic, it’s what makes 99% of the game what it is, all the other mechanics are little ones along the way compared to how integrated their cover system is for gameplay.
   
  Granted, CoD games do not have an explicit cover system like Gears, but they do rely heavily on ambiguous cover in the grand scheme of things with even the health system relying on cover like Halo’s game mechanic (you get shot, run to cover to regenerate health; I don’t know of many people who stay out in the open to regenerate health but there’s always the smart alec to say “me”  ); this being for applicable for both SP and MP. One level that has amazing cover in any CoD game is El Daba; it’s very organic and worked well into the level design. Doesn't have crates stacked perfectly, or all of the cover at perfect angles; covered is detailed too, there’s stray cover here and there, looks lived in, versus just a bunch of stuff sitting around for no apparent reason.
   
  If you look at the Doom video in the timeline above on Dipity.com, a lot of the user made maps for CoD4 look the same such as when the player goes into the room and tries to shoot the enemy in the blue-ish half opened pillar. It’s just standing there with no cover, it doesn’t look dynamic or smart. Nor does it present much of a challenge and isn’t fun.
  
  Virtua Cop is probably one of the earliest games with good cover. You see the enemies actually moving around behind cover, they’re acting as if they don’t want to be shot. It provides a challenge for the player by not having enemies out in the open for an easy kill all the time. Just imagine how un-fun Virtua Cop would have been had there been no cover with enemies just waiting around for the camera view to come into place and the player to shoot.
  
  To wrap it up, modders should focus on adding organic cover to their maps more often and spend time testing it with strangers or people who haven’t already played your map. A good modder will make the map, add little/no cover or add in randomized cover and not thoroughly test it or test it with a few friends/clanmates who’ll automatically give it praise because they’re friends. A great modder will make the map, think about the battles in the map, lay down some cover, test it with fresh eyes of people they don’t know and/or who haven’t seen the map, see where the cover works/doesn’t work, and how well it works/doesn’t work with certain weapons, then make tweaks.


Ah this is too long. I’m no professor, but hopefully this knocked some sense into a mapper who read this, would be great to see a map of great quality next time.</description>

1.  Please do not use the .rar extension to pack your maps, use the .zip extension.  Not all players have winrar and they are unable to unpack the files.  With the re-direct being haphazard at best, downloads from servers vary tremendously.  I've seen players getting upto 900MBs per sec from one of my servers, yet another player on the same server is only getting 13KBps.  Players won't wait for 45 minutes or more to download new maps, so please give them all the same opportunity to download from an external source and to be able to unpack the file.

2.  Create the zip file with the folders already in place; ie usermaps should be the lead folder and the map name under that (eg usermaps/mp_foldername/mp_mapname).  It would then be possible to tell everyone to simply download to their cod4 folder and the zip programe will do the rest.</description>

That's right! A map competition where players will create custom Call of Duty 4 maps, suitable for play in BFE. Each map will then be voted on and the player who creates the winning map will receive a cash prize of $100! (Roughly £60)

This is a beta release and as such, is a work in progress. There is much more to be done, but the essence of HoB4 gameplay has arrived.

Teamwork is essential, with a minimum of two people required to capture objectives rising to 4 (upto 50% of the team) there is now a true need for defenders (campers) and tactical players within the same team. If one team win all the capture zones - thats it - game over. Wars are not won on points, they are won by completing the mission and HoB4 provides that satisfaction.

Drop in and give it a try. You don't need to download the file first (although you can, visit www.heatofbattle.net or download the attached file) on and join the game. As a new player, you will not bring your existing rank with you, BUT, you will rank up in the game and earn your perks.</description>
